Time

Is it too late to start over?

Almost never. The clock that scares you belongs to others. Look at the time you still have, not what's gone, and start with something that fits this week.

"I'm past the age." "It's too late now." "If only it were ten years ago..." These sentences sound realistic, but they are often just fear speaking in the voice of common sense. The question "is it too late?" deserves an honest answer, and the honest answer, most of the time, is no.

What to do now

  1. Ask: too late for what, exactly? Some things have real limits (certain physical careers, certain civil service exams with a maximum age). Most don't. Separate the real limit from the imagined one.
  2. Look at the time you have ahead. Instead of counting the years that have passed, count the ones you still have to work, learn and live. It's usually far more than it seems.
  3. Stop using other people's clocks. Every life has its own rhythm. Comparing your timeline with that of colleagues, siblings or strangers online only leads to paralysis.
  4. Start with something that fits into this week. An application, a class, a conversation, a first customer. Big new starts are made of small beginnings.
  5. Use the advantage of age. Experience, patience, a network of contacts and the clarity of someone who already knows what they don't want. These shorten the road.
  6. Take care of your health so you have stamina. Exercise, sleep, medical follow-up through SUS or your health plan. Starting over takes energy, and energy can be cultivated.
  7. If "too late" comes with deep sadness, seek help. The feeling that life is over can be a sign of depression, which can be treated. A primary health unit (UBS), a psychosocial care center (CAPS) or CVV at 188.

When it happened to Bairo

Bairo Leandro Gonzalez Martinez was born in 1982. Many would have said it was already too late for him to start over so many times: after the hard years of arriving, after the businesses that closed, after going broke with many people depending on him. No one knows for sure how many times he tried and almost gave up.

The attempt he calls the seventh came many years after the first. The two companies he directs in the United Kingdom, Xperienc Global Labs Ltd and CEASA Financial Database Technology Infrastructure and Digital Assets Ltd, were registered at Companies House in 2026, when he was already past 40.

He often recalls the sentence told about the opening of Walt Disney World, on October 1, 1971, almost five years after Walt's death. Someone lamented that he had not lived to see the park, and heard in reply, attributed to Mike Vance: "He did see it. That's why it's here."

The path

For Bairo, time isn't a deadline running out; it's the raw material of what gets built. Whoever has seen in advance what they want to build isn't late; they're halfway there. Today is the earliest day you have from here on. Start with it.

If doubt remains, try a simple experiment: choose a small beginning and practice it for ninety days. A course, a project, a weekend business. At the end of that period, assess it honestly. Most of the time, whoever thought it was too late discovers that what was missing wasn't time, it was the first step. And that step fits into your next week.
