World Food Day 2026 falls on a Friday, October 16, and its theme, set by FAO, is "Innovate today. Nourish tomorrow.", which the UN in Brazil translated as "Inovar hoje para nutrir o amanhã". The aim is to discuss how innovation, large or small, modern or traditional, can transform the way the world produces, stores, transports and distributes food.

What happened

October 16 marks the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, FAO, in 1945. The date is celebrated every year, in more than 150 countries, each time with a theme. In 2025, the day marked the organization's 80th anniversary, with the World Food Forum in Rome, according to UN News. On that occasion, FAO Director-General Qu Dongyu said that the way food is produced and shared is out of balance. FAO also opened a museum dedicated to food and agriculture in Rome, as reported by Meteored.

For 2026, FAO chose innovation as the common thread. The campaign materials speak of solutions that come from science, data, technology, knowledge and nature, and recall that small actions also count, such as choosing healthy foods and reducing waste. The organization uses its framework of the four betters, better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life, to organize the fronts.

In Brazil, the UN opened registration on October 2, 2026, for the poster contest, aimed at children and young people aged 5 to 19. The question is how innovation can help feed the world, protect the planet and build a better future. Registration runs until November 6, 2026.

Why it matters

The theme arrives at a time of mixed numbers. The SOFI 2026 report, published in July, showed chronic hunger falling for the third year in a row, to about 645 million people, and a healthy diet becoming more expensive. The innovation FAO talks about, therefore, is not only that of the more productive field. It is also the kind that reduces cost and loss along the way, where fresh food is most vulnerable.

Innovating, in this sense, can be a drought-resistant seed, an app that connects those who donate with those who receive, packaging that needs no refrigerator or price data that reaches the grower at the right moment. The date is a good reminder that most of these solutions do not depend on a new invention, but on bringing known techniques to those who still lack access to them.

In Bairo's view

For Bairo Leandro Gonzalez Martinez, the 2026 theme speaks directly to an idea he repeats: technology and finance only make sense if they reach someone's table. In his reading, innovating against hunger is less about the most advanced machine and more about the bridge between the food left over and the person who goes without.

Bairo also sees in this the idea that artificial intelligence is an extension of the human, not a substitute. For him, a system that warns before dawn that there is food left over in a market pavilion feeds no one on its own. The ones who feed are the grower, the driver, the cook and the volunteer. Technology, in his view, serves so that these people arrive in time.

Where this meets the ecosystem

Instituto CEASA, the humanitarian front founded by Bairo, is a proposal that fits FAO's theme: using the surplus of the wholesale supply centers as raw material and the autoclave, the old canning technique, to obtain shelf-stable food. The goal of a product that lasts up to two years without refrigeration depends on a stability study and sanitary registration, and the factory is being set up. Stated website: institutoceasa.org (site under construction).

CLAIN, an orchestrator of AI agents under development, and CEASA Bank, an agribusiness financial platform that operates on the infrastructure of an authorized institution, complete the proposal on the information side: price, volume and surplus known in time, so that the decision about the food's destination is made by a person before it is lost.
