2026, a year of anniversaries: Disney 55, Apple 50, AI 70

In 2026 Walt Disney World turned 55, Apple 50, the term "artificial intelligence" 70 and the FAST radio telescope 10. What these dates have in common.

The year 2026 brings together round-number anniversaries of four milestones of imagination and technology. On April 1, Apple turned 50. In the American summer, the term "artificial intelligence" turned 70, counted from the 1956 Dartmouth meeting. On September 25, the FAST radio telescope, in China, turned 10. And on October 1, Walt Disney World reached 55. Each date tells a version of the same story: someone saw it first, and the world confirmed it later.

What happened

Walt Disney World, 55 years. The park opened in Florida on October 1, 1971, almost five years after Walt Disney's death. On the anniversary, Disney's official blog listed more than 70 attractions and experiences opened or renewed since its 50th, in 2021.

Apple, 50 years. The company was founded on April 1, 1976, in a California garage. The Reuters news agency marked the date with a story on the journey from the garage to the top of technology, and CNN aired the special "50 Years of Apple" in April, with interviews such as one with co-founder Steve Wozniak. According to CNN, the company today has more than 2.5 billion users worldwide.

Artificial intelligence, 70 years. The term was born in the proposal for the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence, organized by John McCarthy, Marvin Minsky, Nathaniel Rochester and Claude Shannon, which met in 1956. To mark the 70 years, Dartmouth College organized the conference "AI at 70: What Must Remain Human?", from October 29 to 31, 2026. Dartmouth President Sian Leah Beilock recalled that, seventy years ago, the question was whether machines could simulate intelligence.

FAST, 10 years. The 500-meter Chinese radio telescope turned ten on September 25, according to Xinhua, with more than 1,300 pulsars discovered. It listens, among others, to the hydrogen band.

Why it matters

Anniversaries serve to measure distance. In 1956, the question was whether a machine could simulate intelligence. In 2026, the question of the Dartmouth conference is a different one: what must remain human. In 1976, a personal computer was a garage project. Today it is an extension of the pockets of billions of people.

The dates also show the long time of innovation. None of these milestones was finished on day one. Walt Disney World opened without the man who dreamed it, artificial intelligence spent decades between promises and winters, and FAST took more than three years between the completion of its dish, in 2016, and formal operation, in 2020.

In Bairo's view

Bairo chose October 1, 2026, Walt Disney World's 55th anniversary, to mark at 2:20 p.m. (14:20) the beginning of what he has built. The choice has to do with a story told about the park's opening: according to Mike Vance, then creative director of the Disney studios, someone lamented that Walt had not lived to see it, and he replied that Walt had seen it, and that was why the park was there. For Bairo, that is the logic of visionaries: see first, build later.

The 70 years of artificial intelligence touch his vision directly. For Bairo, AI is an extension of the human, not a threat, and today's generation is the last of humans without AI and the first to live with it. Dartmouth's 2026 question, about what must remain human, is the question he asks too.

The 14:20 time comes from the number 1420, which for him is a symbol of silence and listening, measured by the 21 cm yardstick. The milestone was digital and symbolic. No one transmits on 1420 MHz.

And there is the protection of what comes next. For Bairo, a whole life of records, photos and documents deserves to stay protected in the coming decades, and that is the benefit he proposes with qrqbits: post-quantum cryptography, built to withstand quantum computers as well.

Where this meets the ecosystem

CLAIN and 1420mhz, which CLAIN created, were born from the same meeting between AI and human purpose. CLAIN, in development, proposes to orchestrate niche artificial intelligence agents, always with the final decision in a person's hands. None of Bairo's fronts has any relationship with Disney, Apple, Dartmouth or FAST beyond inspiration.
